Fight the Good Fight of Faith [1 Timothy 6.12]

This verse and passage of Scripture (1 Timothy 6.11—20) couldn’t be more relevant than right now in the U.S., just days from an election. Fighting the good fight of faith isn’t convincing your friends and family to vote for President Trump or Senator Biden. Sorry. It’s not. Fighting the good fight of faith is whether or not your actions are bringing others to Christ. This is something that I have to constantly remind myself of in election years. If what I am doing doesn’t bring people to Christ or bring me closer to Christ, then I need to cut it out. We need to be salt and light to the world—examples of Christianity.

Paul wrote this letter advise Timothy about false teachers in the church in Ephesus. Theories were being taught over solid truth. The letter emphasizes that the gospel leads to practical, visible change in believers’ lives. The true gospel, unlike false teaching, always leads to godliness. Examples of this in the passage include righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Pursue these things. It should be noted that this is how Paul ends his letter. Fighting the good fight of faith is necessary in the life of the Christian.
