It is not uncommon for an athlete to surpass the accomplishments of their coach. A pupil may have greater natural ability that, when properly fostered, can reach a plateau above the teacher. However, the same is not true in the Kingdom of God, where success is not determined by your ability, but by the grace of God through the power of the Spirit. Yet, we cannot simply say a prayer and expect the Spirit to do everything…we are to “work out our salvation with fear and trembling” (Philippians 2.12). If we are in Christ, our identity is united to Him in spirit, which will reach fulfillment when we become fully like Him on That Day (II Corinthians 3.18).
[Luke 6.40]
40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.
[ WHAT ] is this passage saying and what is a key truth or thought that we learn?
+ What does this passage say about the life of a disciple? Is it an active, or a passive role? Is it done alone, or in relationship with others?
+ In contrast to yesterday’s passage, under what kind of person should a disciple of Christ place himself or herself (a blind man, or a teacher)?
+ What is the training regimen for a disciple of Christ? If you don’t know, seek out one of our elders or a mature Christian, and ask them.
[ HOW ] is the Lord calling me to action/obedience?
+ Is there sin to confess or a next step to take? How has it gone since last time?
+ Am I in active training to be more like Jesus? If not, why?
+ It has been said that a follower of Christ should have a Paul (a mentor), a Timothy (a mentee), and a Barnabas (an encourager) in our lives. Do I have a Paul and a Barnabas in my life helping me be more like Christ?
[ WHO ] am I walking with and praying for to discover Jesus?
+ What is my next step?
+ Have I sought to have a Timothy in my life?
+ Am I being a Barnabas to someone else in my circle?
