Blind + Judgmental [Luke 6.39]

We saw yesterday that Jesus encourages His followers not to condemn or judge others. Today, He tells a short parable, or story, demonstrating why we are not supposed to judge those around us.

I just want to make a quick clarification on what judging means. Popular culture encourages non-judgmentalism in the form of relativistic tolerance: “You do you,” they say. “Don’t judge me. You might not agree with my choices, but you can’t impose your beliefs on me.”

This is not what Jesus is talking about with judging others. We should not compromise the Truth at the expense of offending people. When Jesus says that He is the only way to the Father, we have to stand up for the exclusive Truth of the Gospel in a culture that asserts truth is a subjective thing.

However, this passage is not about that kind of judging. This judgment is associated with condemning and unduly criticizing others. It’s the holier-than-thou judgment. Jesus calls us to check our pride when we are quick to condemn others, for we are also just as prone to failing as those around us are.

[Luke 6.39]

39 He also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?”

[ WHAT ] is this passage saying and what is a key truth or thought that we learn?

+ What is the obvious answer to his first question? What happens when the blind lead the blind?

+ In what way are we blind? Keep in mind the context from yesterday’s reading on judging others.

+ What is Jesus pointing out about our nature, or mindset, when we think that we can lead another person by judging and condemning them?

+ What does this point out about our need for a Savior?

[ HOW ] is the Lord calling me to action/obedience?

+ Is there sin to confess or a next step to take? How has it gone since last time?

+ Is there someone in my life that I am quick to judge? Do I need to repent of my pride?

+ Is there someone I need to confront in love, according to Matthew 18.15-18?

+ How can I see others in love instead of judgment?

[ WHO ] am I walking with and praying for to discover Jesus?

+ What is my next step?
