He Has [Luke 1.52-53]

The past two mornings, Luke and Michelle have each covered verses from Mary’s song of praise. Over those two days, her prayer moved from one of thanks for her fate to one of thanks for who God is, what He has done, and what He will do.

This past Sunday, Joey preached on Zechariah and his doubt as it related to fathering John the Baptist. Joey said of this earlier passage in Luke 1 and of God: “He exposes the silence of our unbelief.” In contrast to Zechariah who was made mute, note Mary’s posture.

As you read, meditate on this fact: praise—not doubt—sprung forth from Mary’s mouth, not because she had proof, or because she knew the future. Mary was making these bold and sweeping statements because she believed. Jesus was advance notice that God would continue to do everything within the bounds of His holiness to be a Rescuer and to reconcile all men to Himself.

God said He would bring a Savior and He did. Jesus was the promise of God’s faithfulness. Note the words: “He Has” as we unpack today’s reading.

Luke 1.52-53

52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate;

53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.

[ WHAT ] is this passage saying and what is a key truth or thought that we learn?

+ What applicability does “He has brought the mighty down” have to today’s world climate? [v. 52]

+ What does it mean when the mighty are left standing, even when you may think you know—or even know—that they are wicked?

+ What “long game” is God navigating while letting the world go on? What was Jesus sent for?

+ What are “good things” he has filled the hungry with? The verse does not imply edible food is given to all at all times. What could this verse mean? [v. 52]

[ HOW ] is the Lord calling me to action/obedience?

+ Is there sin to confess or a next step to take? How has it gone since last time?

+ Does getting that job change God’s nature or the statement “He Has”? If the election results are overturned, or if they are certified, does it change the fact that “He Has”, that He is, and that He will?

+ What can we do to be part of His plans rather than occupying our hearts with the futility of longing to change His plans?

[ WHO ] am I walking with and praying for to discover Jesus?

+ What is my next step?
