Today, we look at the final verses of Mary’s Magnificat as recorded in Luke 1. I hope you have received rich blessings pouring over this Spirit inspired song. My hope and prayer for all—as we make our way through the Advent season and reflect on what God has done—is to exclaim like Mary, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior”!!!
Luke 1.54-56
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
55 as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”
56 And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.
[ WHAT ] is this passage saying and what is a key truth or thought that we learn?
+ Looking at Mary’s Song as a whole (vs. 46-56), what do you think is the main theme? What is it, in summary, that brought Mary such joy?
+ In what ways has God “helped” Israel? What do you think about the term “servant” for Israel? What do you think about being called God’s servant?
+ What did God promise Abraham? There are several answers; however, only a few that are also pertinent to his “offspring forever.” Read Genesis 15.
[ HOW ] is the Lord calling me to action/obedience?
+ Is there sin to confess or a next step to take? How has it gone since last time?
+ I think what prompted Mary into song was the fact that it became clear to her that God was going to keep the promise that was made so long ago to Abraham and that she, a person of such low estate, was going to be part of His plan. It confirmed her faith in the Covenant God of Israel!!!
Prayer: Heavenly Father forgive me for doubting You; for being so fickle in my devotion to You. You are a God that ALWAYS keeps His promises. Strengthen me to look beyond my circumstances and place my trust in You. Amen.
“This is one of the ways we differ so profoundly from God. He does not know how to forget. Once God makes a promise, it is sure. His promise can never be broken or forgotten. That’s the God we come to worship…The God of providence, the God of promises, the God who doesn’t know how to forget His promises to Abraham and to his seed forever.” (R.C. Sproul from Luke: An Expositional Commentary)
