As for the Younger Men… [Titus 2.6-8]

This passage is pretty self-explanatory, and we love it because of that–the straightforwardness and simplicity behind Paul’s exhortations here are not easy to miss (also not necessarily easy to digest, either). And much like other exhortations and teachings in Paul’s letters, he doesn’t just say it to say it. Obviously, this teaching in chapter 2 was a necessary reminder for Titus’ flock.

And today, Church? It ought to hold the same load and be just as much of a reminder–if not more, as the days (society) grow darker and as we inch nearer to Christ’s return.

As this chapter previously described how older men, older women, and young women ought to live, the young men are no exception. Let's look intently at this chapter, remembering how the grace of God displayed through Christ is the fuel that brings out a joyful representation of what is expected of those within the Church.

[Titus 2.6-8]

2.6 Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. 7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, 8 and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.

[ WHAT ] is this passage saying and what is a key truth or thought that we learn?

+ Some versions of v. 6 say ‘sober-minded’; what do these two word choices mean for the young man? Why do the young men need to be urged or exhorted to be of this mindset?

+ Why does Paul say that there would be no evil spoken about “us” when he is talking to individual young men? What does this show about the capital ‘C’ Church?

+ Think of this phrase: “Inward transformation for an outward representation.” Does this change any views you have of chapter 2 being sort of “legalistic”?

+ Why does any of this matter to the follower of Jesus?

[ HOW ] is the Lord calling me to action/obedience?

+ Is there sin to confess or a next step to take? How has it gone since last time?

+ Pointing back to the second question above: how does my individual conduct affect the views others have on my family? My community group? My local church body? The church in the USA? What about even the global body of Christ?

+ Wherever I fall in between vv. 1-10, how does my conduct reflect so?

[ WHO ] am I walking with and praying for to discover Jesus?

+ What is my next step?
