The Death of Moses [Deuteronomy 34.1-12]

I hope you have enjoyed our trip through this wonderful book. I am always amazed by the clear foreshadowing of the work and person of Jesus Christ that is peppered all throughout the Old Testament scriptures. I am also astounded by how the commands and stories are still so applicable to my walk with Jesus today. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12).

[Deuteronomy 34]

1 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. And the LORD showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan,  2  all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the western sea,  3  the Negeb, and the Plain, that is, the Valley of Jericho the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar.  4  And the LORD said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, ‘I will give it to your offspring.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.”  5  So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD,  6  and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; but no one knows the place of his burial to this day.  7  Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated.  8  And the people of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended. 9  And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the LORD had commanded Moses.  10  And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,  11  none like him for all the signs and the wonders that the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land,  12  and for all the mighty power and all the great deeds of terror that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

[ WHAT ] is this passage saying and what is a key truth or thought that we learn?

+ What images or thoughts come to your mind when you think of the Biblical character Moses?

+ Scripture says Moses was kept from entering the Promised Land due to his actions at Meribah (read Numbers 20:2-13). What do you think of God’s righteous judgement on this? What lessons can we learn from this?

+ What do you make of the fact that God Himself buried Moses? What about the fact that nobody knows the location of his gravesite to this day? (Read Jude 9 and ponder Matthew 17:1-3 if you want your mind blown)!!!

+ What can we learn about the way Moses trained Joshua? Do you have a protégée you are discipling, training, and equipping to follow in your footsteps?

[ HOW ] is the Lord calling me to action/obedience?

+ Is there sin to confess or a next step to take? How has it gone since last time?

+ Moses probably had a closer relationship with God than any human being who ever lived. Yet even he, the Great Deliverer, was disciplined and suffered consequences when he disobeyed the commands of the Lord. Due to his position in the nation of Israel, he was held to even a higher standard, which is true to those called into positions of leadership today. With great responsibility comes great risks, but also great rewards!!! (James 3:1, Luke 12:48, 1 Timothy 5:17) Father, forgive us for taking lightly positions of influence in which you placed us in this world. Strengthen us with your Holy Spirit so we can be vessels used to spread the Gospel of Jesus wherever we go. Amen

[ WHO ] am I walking with and praying for to discover Jesus?

+ What is my next step?
