Test Drive Success! [Luke 10.21-24]

Yesterday, we saw the 72 return with astonishment at the things they were able to do in Jesus’ name. Today, Luke gives us a glimpse into Jesus talking with His dad. We see a picture of a Son who has just been given preview of His kingdom to come, and He is joyful and grateful for the opportunity.

Imagine if you were 16 and your dad just gave you the keys to a nice, new car and you just returned from a test drive. How much greater would it be to be handed the keys to the Kingdom!? We see Jesus’ humanity in His joy for His brothers and sisters as they gave their reports, but we also see His divinity shine through as He identifies Himself with the Father. Fully human and fully God.

[Luke 10.21-24]

21 In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 22 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

23 Then turning to the disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”

[ WHAT ] is this passage saying and what is a key truth or thought that we learn?

+  To whom is Jesus talking in vv. 21-22?

+ To whom has recognition of the Kingdom of God been given?  What does that tell us about our own walk of faith?

+ To whom is Jesus talking in vv. 23-24?

+ What is it that their eyes have seen?

[ HOW ] is the Lord calling me to action/obedience?

+ Is there sin to confess or a next step to take? How has it gone since last time?

+ Jesus points out that those of us who have seen Him, whether through our eyes or our heart, have a privileged position across all mankind.  In light of that privilege, how then shall we live?

+ How can I embrace a child-like faith?  What are the attributes of the faith a child has in their parents?

[ WHO ] am I walking with and praying for to discover Jesus?

+ What is my next step?

+ Have I identified someone with a child-like view of the world with whom to share Jesus?

+ If the discovery of Jesus is beyond our control, what is our role in the process?
