Put on the Lord [Romans 13:13-14]

Happy Thanksgiving! For many of us, today’s Daily may be the last time we have to reflect before heading into the bustle and the coming tryptophan-induced shutdown, post Turkey. Yesterday, Michael covered Romans 13:11-12 which encouraged us to “put on the armor of light”. How, exactly, do we do that?

In today’s reading we get our answer: we are to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ”. We all know what happens tomorrow in America. You’re going to see tons of lights. They’ll be draped on Main Street, hung on trees, and wrapped around polls. Oddly enough, many of these lights will be intended to draw us to some of the very things Romans warns about (sensuality, immorality, and general excess).

As we enter deeper into this season of Advent, we have an opportunity to see these lights and to instead use them as visual cues to pray, and to rejoice, and to ask the Lord to cover us in His light thereby damping the flames of our flesh. Each tiny light is an opportunity to remember the power we have close at hand, and to invite His strength to shield us from the desires mentioned in today’s reading. Hold fast to this fact and remember that Advent is not only about remembering our Savior’s birth, but His impending return. Be ready by fervently praying for an advance on His presence and His light, every day.

Romans 13:13-14

13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

[ WHAT ] is this passage saying and what is a key truth or thought that we learn?

+ What is the significance of “daytime” here? Paul obviously wouldn’t be saying these sins are any less in the nighttime. Do you think he may be highlighting the scrutiny the world may put us under as Christians?

+ What are some of the ways you can “put on the Lord Jesus”?

[ HOW ] is the Lord calling me to action/obedience?

+ Is there sin to confess or a next step to take? How has it gone since last time?

+ Many of us will be around family today. What opportunities might this provide for us to show what it means to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ”?

[ WHO ] am I walking with and praying for to discover Jesus?

+ What is my next step?
