My Spirit Rejoices [Luke 1.46-55]

Today we’re focusing on Mary’s song of praise. It must be mind-boggling for her to know that the Messiah, the Promised Savior, is in her womb. What joy there is in seeing God’s promises fulfilled!

Are there places in your life where God has fulfilled His promises to you? Have you taken a cue lately from Mary in responding to His faithfulness?

[Luke 1.46-55]

46 And Mary said,

“My soul magnifies the Lord,

47  and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

48  for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.

For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;

49  for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.

50  And his mercy is for those who fear him

from generation to generation.

51  He has shown strength with his arm;

he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;

52  he has brought down the mighty from their thrones

and exalted those of humble estate;

53  he has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

54  He has helped his servant Israel,

in remembrance of his mercy,

55  as he spoke to our fathers,

to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”

[ WHAT ] is this passage saying and what is a key truth or thought that we learn?

+ Mary’s song and soul are focused on whom and why? What does she specifically praise God for? [vv. 47-49]

+ She moves from personal reflection to a larger consideration of God’s character. What does God do for those who are humble versus those who are proud? [vv. 50-54]

+ In the end she remembers that God had promised all this much before her time. What does that say about the character of God? How do you think that knowledge strengthens her joy? [vv. 54-55]

[ HOW ] is the Lord calling me to action/obedience?

+ Is there sin to confess or a next step to take? How has it gone since last time?

+ How can I use this as a model for praise? Do I stop to praise God? Do I recognize His goodness and faithfulness to me?

[ WHO ] am I walking with and praying for to discover Jesus?

+ What is my next step?
