Jesus: Light of Life [Luke 11.33-36] — Downtown Hope

Jesus: Light of Life [Luke 11.33-36]

Jesus uses light and darkness imagery in today’s passage to describe His impact on our lives. It reminds me of John 8.12 where Jesus says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Why would we choose to live in darkness, in uncertainty and ignorance, when we have a light to lead us?

Jesus, Light on display,

Light up my life so I can see truly.

Light up the way I see my world.

Light my life up for the sake of the world.

[Luke 11.33-36]

33 “No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness. 35 Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.”

[ WHAT ] is this passage saying and what is a key truth or thought that we learn?

+ What is it about light that is valuable? What do you think the light is a metaphor for?  [v. 33]

+ If we are spiritually healthy, how will that impact all the other parts of our lives? [v. 34]

+ If we are not willing to accept Christ as our light, what happens? How is it that we can confuse darkness and light in our souls, consciences, hearts?  [vv. 34-5]

+ What is the result of a life that is full of light? [v. 36]

[ HOW ] is the Lord calling me to action/obedience?

+ Is there sin to confess or a next step to take? How has it gone since last time?

+ Am I beholding Christ? Do I believe that in Him alone is light and all else is darkness?

+ Where have I held onto my own beliefs and called them light, even though they stand in opposition to Christ and thus are darkness?

+ Am I reflecting Christ in my life?

[ WHO ] am I walking with and praying for to discover Jesus?

+ What is my next step?

+ Who do I know who needs to encounter the Living Light, Christ, and hear/see the Gospel-light?
