The call to discipleship is not complicated, but it is all-encompassing. Today we see Jesus call two men who would become some of his twelve disciples. It’s a simple invitation to follow Jesus, but they must be willing to leave their worldly securities behind, and so also must we.
Matthew 4:18-20
18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
[ WHAT ] is this passage saying and what is a key truth or thought that we learn?
+ What are the brothers doing when Jesus finds them? Are these the sort of people the Jews would expect the Coming King, the Messiah, to recruit?
+ What does Jesus call them to do?
+ If they accept His call, what does Jesus say that He will enable them to do?
+ It is so neat that Jesus uses the job they know (fishing) and uses it as a metaphor for their new calling. What does it mean to be a fisher of men?
+ How do they respond?
+ What does this passage say about Jesus, his work, his ministry?
[ HOW ] is the Lord calling me to action/obedience?
+ Is there a sin to confess or a next step to take? How has it gone since last time?
+ Have I responded to Jesus’ call fully? Have I left my nets behind to follow Him?
[ WHO ] am I walking with and praying for to discover Jesus?
+ What is my next step?
+ Do I need to invite them to respond to Jesus’ invitation?
