Today's passage asks an existential question. It's purpose is to cause us to reflect, to wrestle internally in search of its meaning, to discuss with fellow brothers and sisters in Christ our thoughts. Jesus provided many such opportunities throughout scripture that served its intent with His listeners then and directs His flock even still. Thoughts here will hopefully help prime the pump, leading to further thoughts and discussions. Be sure to spend time meditating on this passage, and discussing it in your Community Group and Discipleship Band.
Our first command was to fill the earth with the image of God (Genesis 1.27-28). Our lives were to be a living reflection and worship of God (Micah 6.8, 1 Thessalonians 5.16-18, 1 Peter 2.9, Psalm 71.6, Revelation 7.11-12). If we are not fulfilling this purpose, if we are not glorifying God through our thoughts, words, and actions, then what purpose do we serve (Ecclesiastes 1.14)?
May the word of God quicken our hearts to live lives fulfilling the purpose for which we were created: glorifying God.
[Luke 14.34-35]
34 “Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? 35 It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
