Courage to Lead [Titus 2.15]

Today’s verse summarizes what Paul, the grizzled evangelist, wants his protégé Titus to remember from the preceding verses he has written.  Like all of Scripture, it should first be taken in context.  This was written to a specific person at a specific time in history for a specific reason; however, I believe application can be made for ALL followers of Jesus, especially those called into full-time ministry.

“Few portions of the New Testament excel this chapter. It may well form the creed, system of ethics, and textbook of every Christian preacher. Does any man inquire what is the duty of a Gospel minister? Send him to the second chapter of the Epistle to Titus for a complete answer.” (Adam Clarke)

Are these series of verses just for those in full-time ministry?  Let’s examine it together and think it through.  Chris Adomanis

[Titus 2.15]

2.15 Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

[ WHAT ] is this passage saying and what is a key truth or thought that we learn?

+ What does it mean to “declare” something?  And what are “these things” that Titus is to “declare”?  Compare Chapter 1:10-16 with Chapter 2:1-10.

+ How are believers to accomplish living to the standards described in verses 1-10 of chapter 2? Hint, the answer is in 2:11-14!!! We are told every week at the Gathering from our pastors that we are to be “transformed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ”. How does one do that? Do you see Gospel transformation in your life? If not, why not?

+ Definition of exhort: to incite by argument or advice, to urge strongly; to give warnings or advice; to make urgent appeals.  Should this be left to just those in full-time ministry?  If not, how can we do this in Christian love, with believers and non-believers alike?

+ Definition of rebuke: to express sharp disapproval or criticism because of their behavior or actions.  Should this be left to just those in full-time ministry?  If not, how can we do this in Christian love, with believers and non-believers alike?

+ What authority did Titus, a young Gentile convert, have?  Did it come from God or Paul or both?

+ What do you think Paul meant when he told Titus to let “no one disregard you”?  Read this verse in other translations to see what other words are used.  Also, read 1 Timothy 4:12.

[ HOW ] is the Lord calling me to action/obedience?

+ Is there sin to confess or a next step to take? How has it gone since last time?

+ Is there someone in your circle of influence that needs exhorting and/or rebuking? First, check your motives, then pray to the Lord for guidance. Also, have a close brother or sister sure you up in prayer. Then, see how you are doing living up to the standards set in Titus 2:7. If all is “clear”, look for an opportunity to be a Titus to someone this week!!!

[ WHO ] am I walking with and praying for to discover Jesus?

+ What is my next step?
