The Mountain of the Lord [Isaiah 2:1-5]

I can’t imagine a better place to start the season of advent than in the book of Isaiah. Here we see a picture, a prophecy, of peace. Shalom. The Prince of Peace, Jesus, would one day come to earth, fully God and fully Man, and make a way for all people to stream to His mountain.

Although man is sinful, and God—in his justice—must judge and condemn man for that sin, He planned a great rescue from the very beginning. He promised to redeem His people, both Jews and Gentiles. God promised that He would do the work through the Messiah, a mighty King and a suffering servant. In Isaiah 2, we get a sneak peek at the Word, Light of the World, Jesus the Savior, who will lead us to precious paradise.

WHAT is this passage saying and what is a key truth or thought that I/we learn?

(Use the questions interspersed throughout the passage to help make additional observations about the text and clarify the main point)

1 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

2 It shall come to pass in the latter days
that the mountain of the house of the Lord
shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
and shall be lifted up above the hills;
and all the nations shall flow to it,

4 He shall judge between the nations,
and shall decide disputes for many peoples;

+ What will He do?  For whom?

and they shall beat their swords into plowshares,
and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
neither shall they learn war anymore.

+ If the swords are beaten into plowshares and no one will learn war, what does that imply?

5 O house of Jacob,
come, let us walk
in the light of the Lord.

+ How does [John 1:2-5] shed “light” on this passage?

2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
