An Unshakeable Kingdom [ Hebrews 12:25-29 ]

Recently my wife told me a story about a family whose car was stolen. The thief tossed the car seats out and completely destroyed the interior before crashing the car and totaling it. It reminded me how we can lose things in an instant and almost nothing is certain. As we come into a busy season it can be easy to get wrapped up in the holiday hype and forget about what truly matters. In today's text Hebrews is reminding us that Christ is king of an unshakable kingdom. This is the one thing that is certain. While companies come and go, stock prices go up and down, and countries and kingdoms rise and fall, all shaken by our ever-changing world, the kingdom of God stands forever.

WHAT is this passage saying and what is a key truth or thought that I/we learn?

(Use the questions to help make additional observations about the passage to clarify the main point)

25 See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven. 26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” 27 This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of things that are shaken—that is, things that have been made—in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, 29 for our God is a consuming fire.
